Late Bloomers

August 17th, 2009

Steven Jackson is a Late Season MonsterEver have a Fantasy Football season where your star players start to fizzle as the season wears on, right about the time your league's Fantasy Football Playoffs begin? Whether your star player is benched based on a lack of production or a nagging injury, we've all been there and it's not fun. At the end of last season, I was forced to start Teshard Choice over Brian Westbrook for this very reason. Westbrook's body was beat up (as usual) late in the season and Choice had shown flashes of brilliance, not to mention the fact that he had fresh legs, so I had to play him. Though it didn't matter, both players were around 50 yards rushing and neither scored a touchdown. Over the last few years, I have noticed that certain players either continue to dominate or catch their full stride later in the NFL Regular Season. Here are a few who have caught my attention:

Steven Jackson RB, STL - This guy carried my Fantasy Football team on his back in our playoffs during the 2006 season and did the same in 2007 for a colleague. He seems to go ballistic late in the year, probably due to the fact that his lowly Rams can't find a way into the playoffs. SJax must like to end the NFL Season with a BANG which is what he's usually doing to opposing defenders. In standard scoring leagues, he has averaged more than 18 points over the last 3-4 weeks of the NFL Regular Season, right about the time Fantasy Football Leagues are in Playoffs mode.

Randy Moss WR, NE - Mr. Moss is always a threat and his nonchalant attitude seems to lull defenders to sleep. But if you have him on your team, he will not disappoint come playoff time. During his career, he has averaged nearly one TD per game in the month of December. That makes him a late season workhorse in any league.

Donovan McNabb QB, PHI - If Fantasy Football Player draft rankings included Fantasy Football Playoff production, Donovan McNabb would be one of the top QB's on the list. With all the heat Donovan takes during the season, from fans and media alike, one would think the guy is a terrible investment. But I beg to differ. Over the last 10 years, McNabb has been stellar in December, scoring close to 2 TD's per game during this span. Considering the cold weather conditions and their NFC bEast opponents, I would be more than happy with 2 TD's a game from my QB during the Fantasy Football Playoffs.

Maurice Jones-Drew RB, JAX - The human bowling ball continues to roll strikes late in the season. Now that he will be shouldering the RB load in Jacksonville, expect MJD to build upon his already solid late season statistics. In his three NFL seasons, MJD has averaged over 15 points (standard scoring leagues) per game in the month of December. With Fred Taylor out of the picture, these numbers can only go up.

Larry Fitzgerald WR, AZ - Fitz always gives opposing defenses fits, especially late in the NFL's regular season. He's another player who seems to get better as the season progresses and since he plays on a West coast team and plays in a dome, the weather works in his favor as well. Like Moss, Fitz is just shy of a TD per game in the month of December through his career.

Ben Roethlisberger QB, PIT - Big Ben you ask? Yes. Not only do his numbers nearly match those of Kurt Warner, it seems like the Steelers always have something to play for late in the season. Whether it's a playoff spot or homefield advantage, Big Ben finds a way to put up good numbers in the month of December.
